About the Cottage

Tides Cottage is situated directly on the sea front. It is a light, calm retreat which gives real respite and a feel of being away from it all whilst being in the heart of Whitstable close to local pubs, restaurants and cafes. The house offers a fluid living/sleeping space full of rustic charm and simple pleasures. Furnished with natural antiques and quality linens this is the perfect place to unwind with a book whilst watching one of the amazing sunsets. There are three double beds arranged over the property and a day bed under the stairs.

From the front the garden is crammed with romantic old English planting and overspilling lavender bushes. A bench under the front window allows for sitting and watching the world go by. The cottage faces northwest and all front rooms receive wonderful warm evening sunset light. The area in front of the cottage is pedestrian only which is great for sitting out and enjoying an evening drink or letting kids play safely outside your front door. The beach is pebble and it is possible to swim all year round. The groynes provide cosy wind-shelters and the water is often glass-like and still making it ideal for younger swimmers.

The cottage interior is full of original features and is wood floored throughout with salvaged doors / a kitchen made from reclaimed shop fittings and parquet. The cottage is spacious with two cosy living rooms with working fires and a curtained reading bed with feather mattress, a large light kitchen with a Rayburn, blender, coffee makers and breakfast table. There is also a large dining conservatory with old encaustic tiles and a table seating 8. Attention has been paid to small extras such as dimmable lighting and black out blinds. Mattresses have thick toppers and fluffy feather duvets and pillows. The bathroom is supplied with linen bathrobes and organic products from Austin Austin and Green & Spring. The house is full of books, a record player and radios; there is no dishwasher and no television, there is WIFI and a cupboard of dvds and basic dvd player.

Tides cottage is a place for slow simple living. The quirky cobbled garden is planted with lavender and herbs and also has a table that seats eight and a shed with firewood/ deckchairs etc. Well behaved dogs are very welcome in the house and the town and beach are very dog friendly. Being an old fisherman’s cottage the stairs are steep- there is no stairgate but doors can be shut to stop children reaching these if necessary. One of the double beds is on a mezzanine above the master bedroom and the bathroom is accessed through the master bedroom. This makes the property suitable for one family or very good friends! We have lived in the cottage as a family with 3 small boys but some people may find the combination of steep cottage style stairs and a mezzanine worrying for them. Due to the cottagey nature of the house taller types may have to stoop to use the shower attachment in the bath.
